Meet

Matt Commons is a lifelong Hoosier, Army combat veteran, high school teacher, and State Representative for District 13. In the Statehouse, Matt is fighting to deliver conservative results and give power back to rural Indiana. 

 

Raised in Warren County and a graduate of Seeger High School, Matt enlisted in the United States Army and joined the elite 82nd Airborne Division. As an Infantryman with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Sergeant Matt Commons deployed twice to Afghanistan. On his second deployment, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Matt stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in the loss of his right leg. 

 

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Matt returned home to attend Ivy Tech. He later earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and master’s degrees from Liberty University and Indiana State University. Matt currently serves as a history teacher at his hometown school, Seeger High School. 

 

Matt knew that after the Army, he wanted to continue serving his community. He entered public office as a member of the Warren County Council, where he ushered in rural broadband expansion and fought for fiscal responsibility. In 2024, Matt was elected to serve in the Indiana House of Representatives. 

 

As a State Representative, Matt is fighting to defend Hoosiers’ God-given rights, the Constitution, and conservative, common-sense policies. He has defended religious freedoms, protected parental rights, fought against the LEAP and carbon sequestration pipelines, and banned Indiana from establishing taxpayer-funded offices in America’s foreign adversary nations. 

 

Matt and his wife, Alyssa, are the proud parents of two sons. They currently reside in Williamsport. Matt enjoys spending time with his sons in the outdoors and teaching them how to hunt and fish.
